  2. The internet.

    It has revolutionized the information storage and aquisition capabilities, and has sped up progress exponentially.

    In chemistry research, I could instantly look through 90 years of articles from hundreds of journals, even in different languages, to find prior work done relevant to my own, and then correspond with people working on similar projects in other continents as easily as if they were in the next building.

    It used to be that if you wanted to do a big project, you had to get all the scientists together in one place (like NASA), and have them all working side by side.  Now individuals can contribute up to their capability from anywhere in the world.

    the instantaneous transfer and access to data is going to be the cornerstone that drives everything in the future, and enables the individual to get true effectiveness.

  3. The computer as we know it has had more of an impact that any other item I know of.  I realize a computer is a sum of many parts, but as a whole it has revolutionized how we do just about everything.

The internet.  I'm 35 years old - approximately half of my life is pre-internet, half post-internet.  I don't know how many times I've said to myself, "how the h*ll would I have done this/figured this out/got this info/learned this/communicated this/accomplished this before the internet?".  I have forgotten how life was.  I do know it was a lot more difficult.

  9. The cell phone. Think about how many lives it saved, not to mention have convenient it's made life for anyone who has one!
