What do you think when someone says,"I'm homeschooled?"?

First of all, I don't believe the person who asked this question was criticizing homeschool at all... I believe there is a WHOLE segment of the population who has ONLY seen what the public mainstream media has to say about homeschool or what a movie might portray... i can think of at least three movies where Hollywood has the homeschool kid either being socially inept/oblivious or VERY nerdy/so smart they cannot fit in or where the homeschool was used to cover a history of family violence... so please dont assume this person was being mean spirited toward homeschooling....

So what do i think when someone says they are homeschooled?  I wonder what curriculum he is using, I wonder what his grades are like (not because i think they may be bad, but rather really good)....I usually assume his parents are christians ( because I homeschool and am christian).... While I have friends who had adopted special needs children and homeschool them,  I have never met someone who was homeschooled because he was "too dumb"to be in "regular school"... quite the opposite actually...

Most of the people I know who homeschool, besides religious conviction, choose to do so because their child was advanced and getting bored in regular school and then becoming a behavior problem because the teacher was unaware of where the "problem behavior" was stemming from....

While HS kids supposedly have less interaction with other kids their age I do not think that HS kids have ANY problems talking to or acting social around ANYONE (including adults)... I have found (with my own children and others) that HS kids are able to work cooperatively with people of ALL ages, not just their peers.  I find that my children are able to communicate ideas to adults better than other children their age ( I can hardly understand our neighbor boy who is the same age, the boy can't make a complete sentance when he speaks, he is Public schooled and attended PREschool AND kindergarten LOL, he is a sweet boy, if we still are "inschool" afte rhe gets home from PS, he walks right in the front door and says "miss tiffany, can i do school with you?"  and will sit and i get out worksheets for him or we switch to an activity for a group....)  

There is no akwardness with adults or lack of conversation between my children and the adults, and none of my children run to duck and hide when other kids their age show up at the library or sunday school etc...

I hope that you have a chance to befriend this homeschooled person you ran into and learn a little about an "alternative" lifestyle.....  You might even find out that you feel YOU are missing out on something because you are public schooled (i assume) I feel that HS children, if their parents let them do some decision making, get to focus more on what their interests are and become a subject matter expert that MAY eventually lead to a career or formal education path.... this is a strength of HSing I am depending on for my own children

They don't have a problem, I left public school to go to homeschooling. The kids at my school were a whole bunch of redneck hicks. I learned more at homeschooling and still hung out with my friends just as much if not more. Besides I could work a day job and do my homework at night. My internet school had photography, video editing, music editing and my highschool offered none of those and on top of that, the online school had twice as many languages to choose from.

I think he's lucky, self-motivated, and probably a great kid.  At least, that's what I see from the dozens of homeschool kids that I teach, and the hundreds that I know... :-)

I don't think he has a problem at all.  I think, and actually say, "Hey, my son is homeschooled also!"  Then we get into a great conversation about it.

Just because someone is homeschooled does not mean they have a problem.  I believe you are confusing homeBOUND education with homeschooling.  Homebound is when someone cannot attend thier public school due to medical issues or behavioral issues.  It is when a PUBLIC school TEACHER goes to their home or hospital and tutors them.

HomeSCHOOLING or home education is when a PARENT acts as teacher, mentor and/or facilitator.  The students may use a curriculum, or none at all.  They may do all their education online, or all in textbooks, or in an intership/appreticeship, or just out doing things IN THE REAL WORLD to learn.

My son is homeschooled because he is profoundly gifted and the public schools have flat out told us they have NOTHING to offer him.  They fully support our decision.

My daughter is in public school, because that's the option that fits her best, with her multiple disabilities.

well i know i'm stereotyping, but when someone mentions that he is homeschooled, it gives me the impression that his grades are not very good, because being home schooled, you do not get the best specialized teachers to teach you.

Depends on the conversation. I don't envy homeschooled kids because they don't have as much social interaction as they could.

Just last night I helped a homeschool kid my daughter knows get interested in Girl Scouts, so that should help her make more friends.

I think homeschooled people believe that they can't get any better teachings in school.  His problem -- he has to meet a school teacher better than his parents, library and stuff at home.

As a parent who home-schooled 2 of my 3 daughters, I can tell you that there are many factors involved with homeschooling.  Our reasoning for homeschooling during the high school years, was that the girls had all 3 attended a Christian School and had been working in PACE work all of their life, with other supplemental programs as well (such as ABEKA and Saxon).. their main courses were through Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.).  My oldest did graduate after completing high school with a 4.0 GPA (and Valedictorian) and went on to a local University and graduated with honors from there as well.  When the school that my other two attended, started allowing students who had been kicked out of regular public schools, into our school and there were a lot of issues that we were having to deal with, I withdrew my daughters and began homeschoolinging.  They still had the Christian School as their "umbrella school"  meaning, that we had to test and do all the requirements that the state required for the Christian School, that was equal if  not even more extent than the public school.

My second daughter graduated in 2006 and now I still have one more in homeschool, she will graduate in June.  

So before you criticize someone for being home-schooled, get all the facts and the reasoning behind it.

Most of the time, when I say that I am home schooled by my parents, people will think that it is because I do not have enough brains. But what they do not realize is that I study hard. I use CLASS (Christian Liberty Academy School System) and the curriculum is quite tough. They just do not realize the amount of studying you have to do each day.
