What do you think would happen if we live in an amosphere of pure oxygen instead of air?

  1. Pure oxygen is toxic to humans at atmospheric pressure - we would all die.  Also, things would catch fire much more easily, and fires would be more common and larger (fires are a major concern in high oxygen environments such as spacecraft).

    Also, if insects had been allowed to evolve in such an atmosphere, they would be larger.  Lacking lungs, they absorb oxygen through pores in their exoskeleton - a process proportional to surface area - and because volume increases faster than surface area as the insect gets larger, there is an upper limit on the size of an insect.  At higher oxygen concentrations, however, the rate of this respiration increases, so insects can grow larger.  It happened during the Carboniferous period, when Earth had ~35% oxygen in the air.


  2. interesting question.ok,just bother,we just dnt inhale oxygen,we also exhale CO2.our respiration is the result of pressure difference of gases in our lungs and atmosphere.partial pressure is an important factor.if there were 100% oxygen,it would rush in our lungs and u can think wt would happen.
