  1. This may sound silly, but calories don't care how you burn them, so whichever lets you work out longer will help you burn more calories.

The others have given you good advice about protecting your joints.  Follow it.

Putting some weight work into your crosstrainer sessions will kick up your metabolism.  It also breaks the monotony of being on the crosstrainer.

  2. You will burn more calories on the treadmill running for an hour because more effort is involved vs. the cross trainer.

However I would reccomend the cross trainer because its less strenuous on your knee's but still burns a considerable amount of calories.  I choose cross trainers over treadmills everytime and usually run an hour 3 times a week on them, clocking up 1100 calories

  3. running around on a track will help you lose weight. maybe go four times a week or something...dont want to over work yourself.

  4. cross trainer.DO THAT!!!!

  5. try a cross treadmill......well.... if those exist I guess.

  6. cross tranier

  7. do u mean an elliptical? it all depends on you. like mentioned earlier, the treadmill will burn more calories(at the same pace/level) simply because it it harder. of course, if you can do it and your body can handle it, do 1 hr on the mill. personally, i have feet problems, but i can't jog/walk on the tread for more than 30 or so minutes before i get pain/numb feet, but i can do 1 hr on the elliptical.

for me 30 mins on the treadmill at 4.5 mph = ~450 cals

60 mins on the elliptical at 6 mph = 750 cals.

so u can see for me, i can burn more cals on the elliptical, cuz i can't spend as much time on the mill. once i lose some weight and can do 1 hr on the mill, at a slower pace, thats 900 cals.

  8. They are very similar.  Running on the treadmill puts additional stress on the body and joints.  If you have joint issues, the cross trainer may be better.  Also for heavier people, I recommend the cross trainer because it is far less impact on the joints.  The impact of the treadmill may be good for things like preventing osteoperosis.  So there are pluses and minuses.

Honestly it is going to be a question of taste.  Which one do you enjoy more?  If this is at the gym, alternate between the 2.  If you are looking to purchase one, I lean towards the treadmill because there is more that you can do with it.  I have incorporated some lateral movements on the treadmill.  I would not recommend this for everyone, but this is something that you cannot do on a cross trainer.

Also, running for an hour may not be the most efficient use of your time to lose weight.  Adding a strength program will help vary your workout and jumpstart your metabolism.  Maybe you run for 30-45 minutes and then hit the weights for 15-30 minutes.

    Good luck!
