My Cousin
Jonny loosens his grip on his dad’s hand, and his dad faints. Everyone in the room started crying except Aunty Sharon. The Doctor said, “Sorry that we couldn’t save him.†Then the nurse covered his face with a white sheet. The nurse gave me the blue plastic bag. The belongings of my cousin, and good friend, Jonny. Jonny was 5’2 in. 86 lb., Caucasian, blue eyes and blonde hair.
I was surprised he kept all this to himself. He didn’t share with me. I thought he used to share all, the good and bad. My mom, Susan, and I were sitting in the waiting room. Susan was Jonny’s little sister. Uncle Bill and Aunty Sharon were in the small hospital room with Jonny‘s body. Dad and Emily, my little sister, were at home. Aunty Sharon was staring at Jonny’s face. Uncle Bill got his treatment, and my dad and Emily came in. Dad was trying to comfort Uncle Bill and tried to work out the paper work for the funeral.
I looked at the bag the nurse gave me, it was light blue and plastic. Just a simple looking bag that held a 13 year old boy’s last memories. I looked inside the bag. There were jeans, a shirt, a pair of Sneakers, and a folder. I had to see what it was. The folder held papers with neat handwriting. Without hesitation, I knew it was Jonny’s writing. I sat in a corner and started reading……
Mom’s Graduation
My mom is very nice and a hard worker. She called me Buddy for as far back as I can remember, she never used Jonny. She takes care of our home and she knows what we like. She’s always surprising us by making our favorite foods, from her recipe journal. When she fell down from the stairs, even then she did not rest, always doing using crutches. She was always involved in the PTO and coming to school any time she could. She also helped me with homework, but that was before she started working.
I was so proud of her when she graduated. Who thought that mom could look so good in a cap and gown? Her other classmates were looking at their family members while mom was looking at us. My dad was smiling from ear to ear. We waited in the auditorium for her name to be called, finally that glorious moment came. When her name was called, we gave her a standing ovation and clapped so hard that our hands started hurting, but we couldn’t stop. She had finally achieved her goal, she had been a mom and studied full time for three and half years. She came down the stairs with the degree and walked back. I couldn’t hold myself. I ran to her and gave her a big hug. Mom held my face in her hands and said, “Why are you crying, buddy?â€Â
I just looked at all the people going up on stage smiling and being proud for what they had accomplished. Then I started to wonder what my graduation would be like. Would it be like mom’s or could it be even better? Thinking of my future, if I could have just known what trouble was about to come. The trouble that got me to my death bed, pushing my future away. I never did graduate.
Camping
Dad announced that we were going on a camping trip. We took a rental car and were on our way to Wisconsin. During the trip we stopped at a gas station. While we were at the cashier, somebody took mom’s credit card from the car. Later on when we went to the campsite and built our tent it was almost night so we got our sleeping bags and went to sleep. Then we heard someone outside, and there were a lot of flashlights. It was the police and they asked for Dad’s I.D. Card. When dad gave them his ID they said he was under arrest. They took him to the police station, we were there too. The officers searched our car and found a knife, blood and some credit card receipt.
In the morning we tried to bail dad out by asking Aunt Laura and Uncle Mark for money. But the judge said we couldn’t bail him out because it was a murder case. Then Uncle Mark arranged for some lawyers even though we didn’t have the money. Uncle Mark helped us a lot by giving the lawyer the fees.
Dad was charged with the homicide of an old man. The Judge handed down a guilty verdict, and he would be put to death. We lost all hope. The Lawyer’s advertisement worked and an eye witness came forward. This new evidence changed the verdict. When dad came out, we were all happy, but the bills had piled up and we still had to pay Uncle Mark. This was just the beginning of the problem.
The Gift
The happiest moment in my life was when I held my baby sister in my arms for the fist time in a rocking chair and held her real close to me. For eleven years, I waited for that moment. She looked like a doll. She was so cute. she opened her eyes and looked at me she looked all around the room. She was wearing pink and her cheeks were pink, as well. She was so adorable. I tried to tickle her, and she started to cry. Then mom had to take her, in her arms. I was so happy I had gotten flowers for mom and my baby sis
