Scalpel

Scalpel in hand…

sliced myself, open.

No blood flowed.

Just my soul,

bursting forth.

Released…

for all to see.

When spent…

it crawled back in,

tired…elated,

invigorated.

Calm, prevailed,

soothing…

refreshing.

  1. I'm trying to figure out what the scalpel is. Maybe a fountain pen.

You're not supposed to run with pointy objects you know; you could fall and spill your soul all over your mom's good rug.

I'm glad to see you got yours cleaned back up.

Seriously, that is a heavy metaphor. I've thought of my pens as many things, but never a scalpel--utility knife maybe.

Good one--poem of the day (well, that is, it got the majority of the votes from behind this desk).

  2. o my god! i love it! thats truley amazing! seriously!

  3. a scalpel is like a surgical knife used to make incisions

  4. half emo, half uplifting! good balance, totally cool!

We get the point just as much as you did.

  5. I really do not relate to cutting of oneself to release "something". I think the younger generation is doing far too much of it now ♥

  6. Do-it-yourself surgery

    Not something I've tried

    Some friends have tried it

    Sadly most of them died.

  7. An excellent metaphor for poetry as a sort of self-examination, which draws no literal blood but does bring out the life force of the poet.  The metaphor of writer as surgeon or doctor is not without literary precedent, but you have shaved it to ultimate concision.  Less was more.

  8. you being a sign guy, it could be

you cut yourself with an xacto knife

and this really cool poem came out,

after you wiped up all that blood,

wrapped yourself up, and humbly got back to work..

    LoL

btw, i stock SpongeBob bandaids on hand

for times like this to save my soul.

    Elaines interpretation is good too.

  9. It is exhilarating to reveal one's soul.  Especially when accepted and nurtured.

  10. And do the scars remain in heart and mind of  the positive or negative

opinions, how much after burn is felt, hopefully not enough to keep on

    keeping on. Kudos again Neonman.

  11. This poetic form is not your usual format. I like this very much; sparse, no wasted, powerless words, excellent imagery. A strong expression of the poet's feelings of exposing his soul to the world, the pain of doing so, using "scalpel" as metaphor, and the relief and elation that follows.

It is no accident that I have used the expression "sailing high on poetry."
