Question:

What do you use as positive reinforcement?

I teach fourth grade. Last year as positive feedback I used a ticket system. Students got tickets for good behavior. With their tickets they could buy things from the prizes jars (each jar was worth a different amount of tickets because some prizes were worth more to the kids than others). My niece said that her teacher would give tickets for good behavior and then have a drawing at the end of the month for a prize. Does anyone have any other kind of positive reinforcment system they use in their classroom? I'm not opposed to the way I do it, I'm just interested in other ways too.

  1. I use verbal feedback e.g. "I like the way you (specific behavior)" and public praise. Very rarely I use a ticket which goes into a drawing. I also ask kids to self-evaluate e.g. "How did you do today on (specific behavior goal)?" and keep track of their own progress.

  2. praise 3 times as much as u admonish= told to me in training and many years on i hold to that.

give a mixture of praise and rewards

rewards dont get students to work for the sake of working

they need to learn that learning is the prize in highschool not just candy.

in middle school and lower it works-

ive tried good character is rewarded by front of the line lunch passes. coupons form thelocal icecream place.

but spendign time with each id ikfind every lesson is more powerful - it shows them i am involved in  what the do- i am aware of what they produce and i am there for them.

  3. I'm not a teacher however i am a mother of 4 children, ages 5, 4, 4, and 7 months. For good behavior in my home or when we are out and about I use chocolate, candy or quarters. Hope I was able to help a little.
