Question:

What do you use to unjam a garbage disposal?

I broke a broom stick and a hammer so far... There is no s***w underneath and it's humming.

  1. Unplug it. The plug in is under the sink. The with a wooden broom handle turn the garbage disposal from the drain in the sink.

    Trying to do this with power on and it humming is deadly.  


  2. The one I have has a hole for an Allen wrench head.  I have unjammed mine several times by using the Allen wrench provided with the Insinkerator simply by turning it with the wrench.


  3. Before trying to insert anything, top or bottom, shut off the power to the disposal.  Does your disposal have a small hole on the bottom, in the very center?  If it does, then a 1/4" allen wrench is what you will need to unjam the unit.  If your disposal doesn't have this hole, then I would suggest a tire iron from your car, or a very large screwdriver.   They are  strong enough to do the job, and will not break.  If all this fails, then call a plumber.  Good luck!
