  1. That is a good question. I am an experienced Medical Assistant and have worked with many doctors. I see them both in front of and behind the scene. I know what makes a good doctor both as someone I want to work with and as someone I want to see as a patient.

Given all education and skills are there.

    1. S/He has to be a good listener. I want someone to listen to my complaints. (after all I am paying someone to hear what is causing me pain.)

    2. S/He has to be a good teacher. I mean I want to be told and explained what my condition is. I want to know why I am being given this or that medicine.

3.I want someone who will sometimes tell me "no". What I mean is if the doctor truly feels that something is not in my best interest...but I want to know why.

    4. I want someone who is willing to read and learn more about my condition. If I have a strange or complicated problem, I want to know that the doctor will go look it up. After all I don't expect him/her to remember everything.

    5. I want someone who is willing to try new things when appropriate. There are sometimes new and alternitive medicnes that may work.

    6. I want someone who is willing to do the necessary tests. Sometimes people are rushed through and not all tests (blood, lab, x ray, scopes, etc) are ordered.

    7. And that brings up a point. I don't like to be over booked. I don't like to be rushed in and out. I want someone who takes his/her time with me.

  2. My doctor is a total jerk. Whenever I go in to get antibiotics or something, he tells me that I'm not actually sick and that I'm making it up. Trust me, I would not pay $30 to go sit in a waiting room for an hour if I wasn't actually sick. I finally started seeing one of the nurse practitioners in his office because she is a lot nicer and actually believes me when I say I'm sick. I still don't like going to the doctors, I don't trust any doctor since a doctor misdiagnosed me when I was 10 and caused my appendix to explode and me to stay in the hospital for a month. So pretty much, I look for a doctor who doesn't try to kill me and listens to my symptoms instead of calling me a liar.
