I am going canoeing for the first time on Saturday, and I don't know what I should wear or bring! Shoes or sandals? Shorts or long pants? Sleeveless or long sleeve? Bathing suit or no? Hat? Sunglasses? What about preparing for the rain? (Please don't laugh; I really don't know anything about water sports!) Thank you!!

  1. i go canoeing almost everyday and i wear a T-shirt bathing suit or light shorts and i usually go barefoot, if you wear sandles they have a good chance of falling off if you tip and they will float away, so if you dont want to go barefoot use an old pair of tennis shoes you can get wet, and since it is your first time i highly recomend a life vest, espeically if you are going in a deep river or lake

  2. First of all, you need an inflatable life jacket.  And it depends on the weather.  If it's hot - you would wear shorts, top and a hat, if it's cool, the long pants, and if it's raining you won't be going.  Canooeing is not a water sport, it is called 'boating'.

  3. Good for you for asking first. It can make or break your canoeing trip!

First thing is, Don't wear anything cotton. Whether you get wet from sweat, spray or rain, cotton holds the water and is cold. Look for one of the polypropelene type fabrics that wick away the moisture. There are water sandals that are very comfortable to wear. You won't want to be in bare feet because you have to carry your canoe in and out of the water. Shorts are usually the most comfortable, but try to find something in the spandex line, more like a biking short. No bathing suit necessary if you're wearing spandex and propylene. You will need a hat, and you should take sunglasses. Glare on the water can be deadly on your eyes. You'll probaby want to take some sun screen and a lip salve that offers UV protection as well.

I have a nylon rain jacket that rolls up into a little pouch, and that always goes with me. It fits on over a pfd (personal flotation device -- aka life jacket) and yes, you should either wear one or at least have one in the boat. Once you get going, you won't get cold -- even if it rains, so don't worry about taking a bunch of clothing in the boat -- but DO have a change of clothing in the car for when you get back. It is a water sport, after all, and anything can happen, from splashing to total immersion.

Do take a jug of water -- paddling can be thirsty work! Not sure how long you will be out for, but some sort of power gel can give you the energy to get back to shore.

    Have fun!

  4. clothes

  5. bathing suit with a hat and sunglasses.  Put a t-shirt over it and don't forget to take sunscreen.  You can really get a bad burn on the water.  As far as shoes are concerned, wear what is comfortable, but not expensive, because they're going to get wet!

Rule of thumb, don't wear anything you can't afford to ruin or lose.  Oh, and take a ziploc bag for keys, cell and other things that can't get wet.

Have lots of fun and be safe.
