I'm pretty sure adults need either a passport or state ID + birth certificate when traveling by car, but I don't know what's required for a small child (2 years old). Do we need to bring only a birth certificate or do I need to take my toddler to the DMV to get a state ID?

  1. Right now, it's still not required to have the passport but they say it will soon be, I think by June.

We travel to visit my parents and in-laws every 2 wks and all they need is the small birth certificate, not the one with the baby foot prints.

Adults and teens need their birth certificates and a picture ID.

But be ready by June with the passport for you and the kids.

  2. To travel to Mexico by car you are right...adults need a photo ID. and a birth certificate.  Your child needs only a birth certificate. If the other parent is not going to be with you, you must have a letter of permission from the other parent giving you permission to take the child out of the country.  This letter must be signed and notarized.  See site below and read section on MINORS under "Entry requirements."

  3. I think you have another year before you need a passport.  take the birth certificate though

  4. i think as long as both parents are along...his birth certificate will do...although i have seen kids with passports
