Question:

What documents do I need to cross the Canadian border?

I am traveling to Canada next week with three of my friends. I'm 19, and my friends are 29, 20, and 17. We all have our birth certificates and photo ID's, and my 17-year-old friend has signed travel consent forms. We're all legal US citizens, so we don't need a visa or anything like that. We're traveling by car; is there anything else we should have when crossing the border?

  1. It never hurts to have the birth certificates but really you only need a passport to cross into Canada. Be prepared for them to ask anything. They once asked for the address of a hotel I was staying at on a trip to Toronto - I had no idea.

  2. well they changed the rules so now you need a passport unfortunately.

  3. Birth certificate and photo I.D. is all you need for identification, no passport required until June 1st 2009.

Your friend who is 17 must have a notarized letter of permission with phone #'s of parents.

The person who owns the car must have proof of ownership, car owner’s permission or rental papers for car you are driving plus Non-resident Inter-Provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card.

  4. for sure you are good to go with only BC and DL by car.  If flying you need passport.

In June,2009 you'll need a passport even by car.

    Have fun ..

  5. If you have U.S. passports, that will be enough but if you don't, I think the birth certificates and photo IDs might work.
