I was born in Mexico, but have lived in the US since I was 7 years old. I am interested in going to Mexico to work, but I don't have any Mexican documents other than my birth certificate.

What are the documents I need to get, and do I need to travel to Mexico to get them?

  1. You are the first Mexican-American who wants to work in Mexico?, That's ackward... Anyhow I would higly suggest you get all your US Paperwork if you hold a CitizenShip in the United States then automatically you quited the Mexican Citizenship. Some Mexicans have double nationality, but the US doesnt recognize DOUBLE NATIONALITY, if you are resident of the USA then you are still a Mexican so I wouldget all the US documents, such Highschool diploma etc..etc. and get a MEXICAN PASSPORT / DRIVING LICENSE and Then the voting card (IFE)

  2. Yes , you will need to travel to Mexico to get the documents you need. You must have  a voter registration card.  Everyone in Mexico must register to vote and this card is used as a national I.D. card.  Every municipality has an office for this.  ( not every tiny town, but the larger municipality that is over the tiny towns around it.) I presume you will be in a larger city for job opportunities. A drivers license is not accepted as I.D.  You need to bring with you your high school diploma from the U.S., and if possible a copy of your high school transcripts.  If you have attended college or a vocational school, bring those records too.  Level of educatin is VERYimportant for employment here.  People with a certificate showing they have finished "secondaria" ( 9th grade) or "prepatoria" (12th grade)  can get hired for jobs that other people have no chance at getting. When you settle in a town and have a local address, you should go to the palacio municipal and register as a local citizen and get your CURP card...this is an additional form of I.D. and counts you in the local population.  I hope you realize that jobs are scarce in Mexico and wages are a fraction of what they are in the U.S....even for professionals, like doctors, nurses, teachers.  Your birth certificate is key to EVERYTHING...super important in Mexico.  Make several copies of it...and never loose the original.  It would be good for you to have a Mexican passport too...you can apply at the nearest Mexican consulate in the states if you like. Hope things work out well for you.
