  1. Hi,, you will need your passport... and I suggest this...

make a color copy of it,, the photo and part that has the number assigned,,  and also make copies of any credit cards you may have... keep the originals in a very safe place and when you go out shopping ,, sightseeing ect,,, keep the copy of the passport with you....(you may need the cards) ..... they are to help incase you have them stolen....to report ...

Also,,in Rome,,, be very aware of pickpockets,,, they are Good at their trade.....

    good luck

  2. Hi,

your question is rather vague but I will try to answer. First of all to travel to Italy you need only your passport (if you are from Canada or the US.) For other countries in North Central and South America a Visa to the European Union may be required. Many American countries do not need Visa to go to the EU but if you are not a citizen of Canada or the US you should call the nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate.

As a Canadian or US citizen you are entiled to an automatic Visa for Italy (and for that matter the entire EU) for no longer than 90 days.

In order to travel to Europe, you need to have a valid passport that is valid for more than 6 months from the time you wish to fly to Europe.  It is advisable to take your driver's license with you even if you do not plan to hire a car.

Technically speaking most European countries require its citizens and guests to carry an official form of identification with them at all times. This would technically mean your passport, but because in Rome there is a lot of pick-pocketing it is advisable not to take your passport with you when your touring around the city or going out to bars or pubs.  If a police officer stops you and tries to give you a hard time for not having your passport you can have him take you to your hotel where you can show it to the officer.  Most Italian police officers, if they are giving you a hard time for not having ID,  will shanke their hand in your face, say something loud and just walk away.  In these situations, your driver's license will be useful.

One thing you have to know about Italy it's its immigration problem. There are many illegal immigrants in Italy, not only from Africa or the Arab countries but also white people from Eastern Europe.  If you are white but look a bit Eastern European, the police will probably stop you. If they realise that you are from either Canada or the US, they will usually walk away.

Something to keep in mind is that if you want to exchange your currency to Euros you may need your passport so it is best to Exchange in the airport or in the Hotel, unless the hotel has an outrageous exchange rate, and in Rome many do.
