  1. You are background and you never speak.  You do what the AD tells you to do.  Non-union extras get about $80/day (and the days can be very, very long with no overtime).  Union extras get about $140 for an eight-hour day, plus overtime and other perks.

  2. an extra, or background player, is part of the scenery, you do what the assistant director tells you to do. It pays about $75 a day and lunch.

  3. Extras don't have any lead/main/supporting roles, but they're the people in the background of the scene to make it look more like that scene. For example, when you're watching a scene that takes place in NY, there will be taxis everywhere, people walking everywhere, etc. or if it's a scene at a football game, there has to be people in the stadiums to make it look like a football stadium. Being an extra builds resume experience and helps to get used to being on a set. It's also really fun and you get to meet exciting people... not to mention celebrities. Some extra work don't pay, but you do it for volunteer or just for experience. They don't pay alot - average is probably 80 dollars maybe for about 10 hours - but it's actually worth the experience.
