What does 'Hammer on' mean and how do I do it?

I'm learning a song right now on my electric, and it says 'hammer on' (short term 'h')

Here's a snippet of what I'm learning.. hopefully it will help you to understand what I'm asking..

  1. You use the finger on your fret hand to press down on the string (hard) and then release quickly to get the chord.  All of the sound from a hammer on comes from the actions of the finger on the string from your fret hand.

    Hard to explain...hope that helps


  2. You don't strum, you just put your finger down on the second note after strumming the first one.

    Your finger acts like a hammer.  When the first note is ringing, you use a different finger to "hammer" down on the note, without strumming.  It is usually used for play notes in quick succession.

For that little that you gave for example the first thing you would do is on the ninth fret pluck the third string from the top and then while that note is ringing you take another finger and "hammer" it on the third string from the top but on the 11th fret.  But if that doesnt help search on youtube for hammer ons
