What does 'Mas' mean?

I was in France recently, and I saw it quite a lot when on the road. I think it may be something like a farm for wine, or a type of house, something like that.

It looked like the driveways to provate properties. But I would like to knw the exact meaning of it :)

    It sounds Spanish because it is a word from the old southern language Provençal which is a close cousin to Spanish and Italian.
