What does 'calivo' mean in Spanish?

there's a place named as such.. i'm thinking 2 possible meanings where it was named after..

1, from the clavo tree (cloves) or

2, since its the Spanish equivalent for nail, then it might mean the act of thrusting or driving [away or out]

there's also this idiom "Clavarsela" in Central America which roughly means to get drunk..

and the phrase "clavar un clavo con la cabeza" figuratively means 'to be very stubborn'..

in the local area, though there is a plant known as clavo, it is rather what we'd call the oregano or the Pot Marjoram..

any idea, anyone..?

  1. There is no Spanish word "calivo", check your spelling.

  2. Calivo (or as you yourself have found, RESCOLDO) means an ember.

It has nothing to do with "clavar" which is the verb "to nail".

Nor with the clove tree (CLAVERO - Syzygium aromaticum) whose dried flower buds are used as a spice.

There is no place in Spain with that name. Nor have I found any reference in my atlases to a place with that name in other parts of the world.  Could you indicate where the place you refer to is?

Similar word in spanish could be "calvo" meaning bald....

"cavilo" the present tense of cavilar, which means to think (and refers to profound thinking)..

Cavilo as a noun, also refers to a sophistic or misleading reasoning (an archaic word no longer in use ).
