What does 'don't tread on me' generally mean?

I know it has to do with the Revolution and flags and such, but does 'don't tread on me' basically say 'don't walk all over me'?

  1. i think it means don't infringe on my basic rights and freedoms.

  2. It may have came about in the west. It meant to be carefull of snakes. I see it on flags often.

  3. No r****d it has nothing to do with not stepping on snakes.  The flag is called the Navy Jack and it is flown on navy ships today.  It started in the revolutionary war with a batallion I guess you could say.  It is kind of like "no taxation without representation".  It means don't take us lightly we will kick you ***.
