  1. You don't leave a deposit when you receive the bottle, and you don't get your (non-existent) deposit back if you give the bottle back to the person you got it from. It dates from the old days when people used to get things in glass bottles, which were sort of recycled. It was before the days of recycling as we know it. Instead, you'd at that time get milk delivered every few days, in glass bottles, and other things too, like cream, and seltzer. You'd put the bottles back on your stoop for the milk man to pick up on his rounds, and then they would be washed and reused. But in situations when the bottles weren't to be returned and reused, they said "no deposit no return." Nowadays, when we have recycling, a number of states have passed deposit laws, so every bottle or can you get has a deposit of $0.05 or $0.10  on it, and when you return it, you get that money back. And it's written on the can or bottle that that's how much you will get back if  you return it.

  2. Ya, "no deposit, no return"

    that is DISPOSABLE!

  3. sometimes You have to pay a deposit so You have to take the bottle back to where You bought it from & get Your deposit back

  4. it means if you haven't put a deposit down on it don't bring it back because we won't give you any money (bottles used to include a deposit - 10p- which you got back if you returned the bottle for recycling/re-use).  now we're expected to dispose of them ourselves.
