  1. Other people have said it pretty well - but the 400-600 kb/s is the average download speed you'll get with an EVDO Rev A aircard in good coverage areas.  I happen to have Sprint's wireless internet & generally get well above average download speeds & decent upload speeds.

If you're more familiar with the download speeds as displayed when you're downloading a file on a DSL or cable connection, I average around 90KB/s to 150KB/s when downloading (and 15KB/s - 35 KB/s when uploading) - which is comparable to the speeds of a 1.5 Mb DSL connection.

  2. alexius explains it well...

one thing worth noting is that the numbers you are reading are "average range"... the reality is many EVDO users see much faster speeds than "average".

  3. upload speed is always slower than download speed.

downloading is when you d/l a song, a video, a picture or a document from the net. in this case you receive information FROM the net (from a server).

uploading is e.g. when you send a mail (with/without an attachment), or even here on Yahoo! Answers when you ask or answer a question. in this case you are sending information TO the net (to a server).
