  1. Starting with you, your 5th great-grandparents count as 8 generations (4th great would be 7 generations). Figuring 20 years per generation, 7 would figure 140 years back and 8 would be 160. Using your birth year, subtract that figure to get an approximate year they were born (example: if you were born in 1975, 140 years ago would be 1835 and 160 years ago would be 1815).

  2. Some people use such terms, which is confusing, to denote how many generations ago an ancestor was.  To avoid confusion, one should merely state how many generations ago: e.g., parents would be 1 generation ago, grandparents 2 generations ago, etc.

4th grandparents could be 4, 5, or 6 generations ago, depending upon the source.

  3. Start with your parents,

    their parents are your grand-parents,

    your grand-parents ,parents,

    are your great-grandparents, or 1 x grandparents,

    their parents are,

your great-great grandparents, or your 2 x grandparents,

You add another great for each generation that

you go back. So your 5th, great grandparents would be your

    great, great, great, great, great-grandparents.

Instead of adding all those greats it is much easier to say they are your 5th. x great-grandparents

And remember you have two sets of grandparents, and two sets of 5 x great-grandparents

  4. That's how far back the line goes.

  5. You have two sets of grandparents, four sets of great-grandparents, eight sets of great-great-grandparents (2nd great-grandparents), sixteen sets of great-great-great-grandparents (or 3rd great-grandparents); 32 sets of great-great-great-great-grandparents (4th great-grandparents), and 64 sets of great-great-great-great-great-grandparen...  (5th great-grandparents
