What does the AF-S ED mean on a camera lens?

What does the G mean after the F2.8?

At the end of the lens it says IF-ED, whats that stand for?

  2. AF-S designate the Nikon lens as having a silent focusing motor, what Canon calls USM in their line of cameras

    ED is the high quality class used in Nikon's high end lenses.  Canon calls theirs the "L" lens.

    G means that there is no separate f/stop ring ... all the aperture adjustments are adjusted from the control k***s located just behind the shutter release button   a so called "thumb" wheel.

    IF-ED means that the ED (high quality lens) uses internal focus ... this means when you are using a filter like a polarizer it does  not have to be re adjusted since the front element of the lens does not move when focusing or zooming
