  1. Blu-ray is a disc format that's the new successor to DVDs.  You cannot play it on a standard DVD player, but you can play DVDs on a Bluray player.

    Bluray players use a blue/violet wavelength of light to read data on discs, whereas DVD players use red lasers.

    As a result, Bluray discs support up to 25gb per layer.  Dual layer discs are in production, and there's a theoretical limit of 200GB discs.

    So for games this means more space for levels, textures, animations, etc.  For movies, this means higher quality audio and video.  Bluray movies are 1080p, with up to 7.1 lossless audio.


  2. Blu-Ray refers to the blue laser used to read the disc.  blue has a shorter wavelength than red lasers so it can read the smaller pits on the higher density HD discs.
