  1. At the turn of the century, i.e. 1900, the Chinese tried to drive foreign invaders from their land. The Japanese and Europeans found rich pickings there and were more advanced in weaponry than the Chinese who clung to the past unrealistically. Some Chinese leaders told their soldiers that their marial arts boxing styles would make them invulnerable to the bullets of the Japanese and Europeans. There were Chinese with spears, swords and bows plus unarmed techniques against rifles, machineguns and cannons, so you must know how well that worked. Japan continued to invade China until it was finally beaten in World War II.
