Also known as a "planned" economy.  This is where a central authority, i.e. the government, decides what will be produced and by whom.  This is the old communist system used in the the Soviet Union.  The US has a capitalist system in which individuals' and companies' choices determine, to a large extent, what will be produced and at what price.
