I see it everywhere. Even on the curtains at the Royal Opera.

  1. It stands for Elizabeth Regina (regina = latin for queen)

Alternatively it can stand for   'er, you know, the one in the palace.  ;-)

  2. "Elizabeth Regnant"  Regnant means reigns or rules.  It just means she's the current monarch.    (Yeah, it does sound like "she rules" in modern slang, but ER is a very old usage.  Maybe that's where the kids got it from!)

  3. It stands for Elizabeth Regina.

  4. Elizabeth Regina, latin for Elizabeth the Queen.

  5. Elizabeth Regina. Her initials would, if anything, be EMW, Elizabeth Mountbatten-Windsor.  She signs herself Elizabeth R.  Most British monarchs have used either this type of signature, or their Christian name alone.

  6. it means her- Andy Capp, a well known brit, always pronounces "her" as " 'er ".  As time went on, the ' was eliminated.

  7. Elizabeth Regina (Regina being latin for Queen).

The Queen will sign her name Elizabeth R. See the Canadian Constitution original for example, signed by the Queen in her own hand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Const...

A king uses Rexius (latin for King) eg George R.

From 1876 to 1948, the Kings and Queens of the UK were also the Empreor and Empress of India. Thus they used RI- Regina Imperatrix, Queen Empress (for example Queen Victoria was Victoria RI)

  8. Elizabeth Regina, or Elizabeth the Queen, are the words the monogram represents.
