What does it mean if you are Emo or Goth? What qualifies you to be Emo or Goth? What's the difference between the two? If you wear black nailpolish are you goth/emo?

Similar to emo's (writing poems), but they dress alot scarier with chains and stuff, and are probably into cuff s*x. they will also knife you if you make them mad, and/or kick you with their big boots. (experience)

  2. It means you are part of a music subculture...

Goths are avid fans/musicians of goth rock (a genre of music that came out of post punk in the late 70's, With a bit more nihilistic and  darker theme than most of the rebelious punk songs of the day.)

Goth bands = 45 grave, Christian Death (the older band by the name not the newer one), Bauhaus, the Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cult, The Mission UK, etc..

And more recently: Voltaire, Bella Morte, the Birthday Party, Anders Manga, London after Midnight, Cruxshadows, etc

Emo however is 3 seperate subcultures over the last 2 decades all using the same name.

First there was a music subculture that came out in the late 80's of emotional punk rock (hence the name... emo, short for emocore/emotional hardcore punk.. based on all emotions). This subculture died out shortly thereafter.

Then in the mid 90's another music subculture came out. (ironically enough fronted by a band that was led by the same singer whose prior band started the original emo subculture.) called emo... though this one was more focussed on the emotions from relationships gone bad. Again, it was short lived.

Finally in the last 4 years the final subuculture came out calling itself emo... which is actually more of a fashion/style subculture than a music one... as the bands people are calling emo are not from any one genre, and the current group are imitating the fashion of the second emo subculture.

Example bands would be:  Fugazi, Rite of Spring, etc..

Honestly the looks and such are more from the people in the subculture imitating their fave musicians vs. anything else.
