They make over a home that is in horrible condition, and is usually for a family that has at least someone in the home that is sick or handicapped. And sometimes, the family is just in bad debt and needs a new home.

Extreme Home Makeover does two things.

The first is that they build houses for very deserving families who don't mind being exploited for it as payment.  The show pays off their mortgage, Ford gives them a new car, and the family gets their five seconds of fame.

A pretty awesome deal for the family.

The other things Extreme Home Makeover does is that it gives smarmy over hyped Ty Pennington an outlet for his uber doucheiness.

I should know, I helped them out when they came to my town. Ty wasn't there the day I worked but I got the rest of the designers to sign my hardhat.

The only bad thing was that I was too young, so I ended up having to work in the kitchen cooking food for the volunteers.
