What does Fief mean?

I read the meaning on dictionary.com but i dont under stand what i means.

Can someone tell me what it means and no wik peadia sites.

land that a lord gave to a vassle, kind of as a reward for working for him.

but the vassal still had to pay for it and remain loyal to their lord.

i'm pretty sure that's what i learned last year in global. haa
