The phase is "Consider what tanks can be flooded to alleviate the loss of GM".

This is included in a procedure manual in case of excessive listing of a ship.

  2. Kay's got it, but here's a simple way to imagine it.

GM is a geometric line that connects the center of gravity (G) and the Metacentric height (M). Think of the metacentric height as the tipping point created by putting weight either up high in the boat or down low. If you put the weight very low,  the boat will snap back to center dangerously fast when it rolls. Too high, and the boat will roll gently and slowly, but very deeply.

If your G is above your M, the boat will capsize when it rolls.

  4. I believe it's an indicator of vertical stability.

So if the ship was listing to the right, you would flood a tank on the left to bring the vessel back into a vertical alignment.

  5. "gm" is the distance from the center of gravity to the metacenter
