What does Identidad y cedulacion means? issued by the registro civil?

  1. Peru uses DNI (I believe documento nacional identidad--document of national identity).

    Colombia uses cedula...basically an identity card with a number similar to social security number and place of issue.

    Most Latin American countries I have been to have some sort of ID and it is required to be carried at all times. People picked up without one are taken to the commisaries (police stations) until someone shows up with proper documentation. If the person is a foreigner, they are deported.

    The civil registry issues documents and records marriages and the like.
