  2. Apparently your thyroid needs it to do its job.  So if it doesnt get enough iodine your thyroid will grow to enormous sizes and make a huge thing on your neck people laugh at you when youre not looking.

  3. Iodine is an essential nutrient that allows your thyroid to produce hormones.  Iodine deficiency causes goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland.

  5. Your thyroid gland, which is located in your neck, needs iodine to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control your body’s growth and metabolism and are important for the development of the brain in babies and young children. Without sufficient iodine, the thyroid gland is unable to produce an adequate amount of hormones, which can have serious health consequences.

  6. The thyroid is composed of spherical follicles that selectively absorb iodine (as iodide ions, I-) from the blood for production of thyroid hormones. Twenty-five percent of all the body's iodide ions are in the thyroid gland. Inside the follicles, colloids rich in a protein called thyroglobulin serve as a reservoir of materials for thyroid hormone production and, to a lesser extent, act as a reservoir for the hormones themselves.
