What does Julia Goerges lack? – Tennis Special
World number 29, Julia Goerges, had a smashing start to the season but witnessed a drastic slump in her form that forced her to crash out of the Top-20 players of the world after reaching the number 15th spot. It seems
like she has been jinxed by many of the Germans who thought that she will be the number one German and one of the Top-10 players by the start of the clay court season.
Goerges is such a perfect tennis professional when she gets going but tennis seems to be an alien thing when her form is dismal. She started her campaign in Auckland and lost in the second round of the tournament having entered
it as the fifth seed. First round exit in the Apia Sydney International hinted another poor season for the German beauty queen but a stunning performance in the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, revived her form. She reached the fourth
round of the tournament where she lost to the number one Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska.
It was the turnaround in her luck and she wanted it back to achieve her career long dream on breaking into the Top-10 players of the world. She reached the quarter-final stage of the Open GDF Suez and second round of the Qatar
Ladies Open in February.
Her best performance came in the Dubai Duty Free Championships when she ousted the likes of Svetlana Kuznetsova, Daniela Hantuchova, Caroline Wozniacki, on course to the final of the tournament but again lost to the in-form Pole,
Agnieszka Radwanska.
Indian Wells was another good tournament for her; reaching the fourth round but she failed to deliver in Miami; losing in the opening round to the former world number one, Kim Clijsters. She made it to the last eight in the Barcelona
Ladies Open but the major disappointment was witnessed at her home soil in Stuttgart, Germany when she failed to pass the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix tournament and that also ended her dream of defending her title.
The points she lost in that tournament proved to be a disaster for her and now she is on the verge of the falling out of the Top-30 players list. The problem with the German tennis ace is that she gets frustrated very easily and
bobs down in tough situation; instead of rising up to the occasion, she loses temper and commits several unforced errors on the trot.
Mutua Madrid Open and Rome were also disappointing for her. She failed to pass the first round in the former tournament whilst bowed out to her compatriot, Angelique Kerber, in the third round of the latter.
If she wants to reach the advanced stages of the French Open, starting in a week’s time, she needs to develop patience in her game play. She has emphatic stamina to dig deep and win the matches in three sets but she doesn’t earn
an opportunity to play the third set and falls apart in the second. I was ecstatic to see my beloved tennis ace in form this season but her recent performance has disappointed me. However, I have full faith in her abilities and if she manages to build a lot
more patience she will be a massive force in the upcoming Grand Slam.
