What does Karl Marx discuss on Religion in The German Ideology?

I have a paper to do on Karl Marx stand on religion but I seem not to understand what he discusses on The German Ideology. Any feedback would be great. Thanks

  2. "Religion is the opiate of the masses" - that is his famous quote from this piece

    Marx, unlike later followers, was not virulently atheistic - he simply felt that organized religion made people content with the status quo - they gave a false explanation of reality, and so they masked the true condition of mankind in class-based society. Since people were lulled into sleep waiting for heaven, they would not act in a revolutionary manner to change society now on this earth, in this lifetime.
