What does Mercury in Scorpio (or in 8th house) mean?

My friend has Mercury in Scorpio. My sister has Mercury in 8th house.

I read that either of these placements can mean lies, jealousy, and paranoia. Is there any truth to this??

  1. That is the traditional interpretation of those two placements.

Mercury in Scorpio mainly appears to express itself with a acid tongue. This placement seems to want to pull every taboo into the spotlight, expose it and make it commonplace. There is that morbid pondering of death issues, too..this was probably the birth of Emo....This is a great placement for a comedian, satirist, editor, investigator, or detective, as long as the other placements offer sufficient talent to support it. Otherwise, it's a bit of a bummer.

In my experience, Mercury in 8th seems to be the worse of the two for the paranoia and jealousy. The native with that placement tends to turn all thought processes toward 8th matter issues and tends to be egocentric (like a toddler)  and unable to empathize with the plight of others, which can make them intensely paranoid, suspicious, and often suicidal, or at very least, depressive. This placement can often highlight mental illnesses, specifically depression, and sometimes addictive coping patterns (especially when aspected or accompanied by Neptune).

When paired with a more enlightened Sun or Moon, you can see a pattern where the 8th causes depressive behavior, and the Sun or Moon attempts to recover, and this can cause the native to exhibit bipolar characteristics. Sometimes, with the proper support, the Sun can pull the Merc out of the doldrums.

A native with this placement does well to get plenty of sunshine, exercise, stay healthy, and seek counseling when the bad times hit.
