he listens to rap. Bruce McAvaney (australian commentator on channel 7) has said Phelps likes a bit of "doof doof" before a swim to get his adrenaline pumping.

I was wondering this too!

Maybe it's just some of his favorite music that gets him in the zone and helps him concentrate on his swimming instead of the fact that EVERYONE is watching him.

Actually I happen to know this! I heard him say so in an interview a few days ago. He said that it was mostly Hip Hop to get him in the competition mood and and sometimes slow, relaxed music like a few hours before so that he is completely chilled. =)
