the name minimi is mostly known in the European country's but the American army known it as the SAW ( squat automatic weapon )

Minimi is a contraction of the french words mini ( small ) and mitralleuse ( machine gun ) this is because FN , the firm who invented the gun and many other world wide known guns like the FAL, MAG, FNC, ..., is situated in the french speaking part of Belgium

MINIMI is what the Belgian FN weapons producer calls the machine gun they produce.  I believe it's a contraction.
