  1. Newton's first law states:

    An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

    Space is generally considered a frictionless environment because of the lack of air or anything else in it.  When a spaceship puts on thrust, it is pushed in the direction opposite the thrust.  When this propulsion is shut off, the space ship will continue to travel in the same direction in a straight line because no other force is acting on it to change its velocity or direction of travel.
