  1. It's an indefinite measurement (correct term?).  What it means is that there is one equal part sugar compared of the rest of the ingredients parts.  Nevermind.  That isn't the clearest.  I'll give an example and hopefully that'll help.

Recipe for Rum and Coke (just an example)

    - 1 part Rum

    - 3 parts Coke

Let's say you had 2 cups of rum that you wanted to use up.  Well, that would be 1 part.  So to follow the recipe, you would need to add 3 equal parts Coke equivalent to the 2 cups of Rum.  So 2 cups * 3 parts = 6 cups of coke.

    Hopefully this sort of helps.

  2. It means that whatever measuring device you use, you use one of them, or three of them according to the recipe. If it happens to be a measuring cup, use one cup or three. If it happens to be a jam jar, same thing, use one jam jar or three

  3. use 4 cups water 1 cup sugar

  4. It means in relation to how many parts of other ingredients. In this case probably water.

However, there are commercial feeds available that are better for the birds than refined sugar.
