In April this year, my fiance took me to Benidorm for the weekend to celebrate my 40th birthday.

We took a trip to the beautiful resort of Calpe and were amazed at this rock, it's beautiful.

My fiance is Welsh, and he says Ifach sounds like a Welsh word, I know it's unlikely, but do any of our Spanish friends know where the name comes from?

  1. penon is Spanish for rock. the origin of the name Ifach is not clear - a guess you may find here:

  2. I am not Spanish, but can answer your question:

    Penon de Ifach -

    Penon means Rock in Spanish

The meaning of Ifach has several origins, none of which have been proven:

Firstly from the Argonauts in the 13th century B.C

Others claim it's from the Phoenicians who called it Ifac (Lybian for "of the north")

Whatever, or whomever named it so, it has been the ideal spot for strategic settlements by various mediterranean civilisations . Iberians, Carthaginians, Romans, Phoenicians, Arabs and Christians alike. A perfect lookout spot, where there are still remains of a  watchtower today.

Maybe I will climb it when the weather gets a little cooler. I was there last week and watched people in the early evening climb until they were so small you could hardly see them. It was only because someone was wearing a red t shirt that we were able to see him (or her) keep climbing. The authorities only allow a certain amount of people each day to climb the rock as it is part of the nature park, and therefore protected. I live in Benidorm so look forward to going to Calpe again, you can´t beat the seafood restaurants and the sea is so shallow and clear it´s a real day out for us, even though we live at the beach.

  3. Ifach is NOT a Welsh word.  'Penon de' definitely is Spanish which would make sense if you were in Benidorm.'Penon' means 'rock', 'de' means 'of'.

It's probably 'Rock of Ifach' but after seeing the picture could it mean 'p***s of Ifach'?
