It is one of the many ways you can abbreviate Giuseppe.  Giuseppe is Joseph in English. Peppe, Beppe, Giu, Pino, Peppino, Giuseppino, Pep, Bep....the list goes on and they are all abbreviations of Giuseppe.

it is a nickname for the name Joseph.  in italian, Joseph = Giuseppe.  so they use the the last 2 letters and make Peppino.  its like calling someone Joey.  i dont know how common it is now in italy, but i do know a lot of people that i call Peppino.

I agree it could be an old-fashioned way to give a friendly nickname for Giuseppe (Giuseppino -> Pino -> Pipino), but you should consider that it's also the Italian translation of an important king's name: Pepin the Short (in Italian: Pipino il Breve), father of Charlemagne. Actually Pepin/Pipino was the name of many Carolingian kings.
