  1. It means that the manufacturer of the product is offering you a rebate for buying their product and filling out some paperwork.

Example:  A widget costs $75 but World Wide Widget is offering a rebate of $25 if you buy the widget by the end of the month.  The store Widget-Mart might advertise the widget as costing $50 (after mail-in rebate).  You will have to pay Widget-Mart $75 for the widget and then mail in the rebate form and receipt and anything else they require.  Then World Wide Widget will send you a check for $25.

Your net cost will be $75 less the $25 rebate for $50 total purchase price

  2. It means they you have to pay the store the rebate dollars and then rely on the company to send your rebate.  I have found in about 25% of the cases, you never get the rebate.  WHen you check with the crooks they claim to have not received your paperwork or that you submitted wrong or too late.  AVOID THESE DEALS AND GET A STRAIGHT SALE TO AVOID AGGREVATION!
