Yip! That's right. It stands for Read Only Memory.

And that means, unlike RAM (Random Access Memory) the cpu can only read from this memory (which is pre-programmed). With RAM the system can write data to the memory and read from it.

    Happy computing :)

  2. Yep, that's right. It's Read Only Memory

  3. read only memory (i think)

  4. read-only memory

  5. Read Only Memory

  6. I think its Read Only Memory

  7. ROM is "Read Only Memory" -- The naming convention (RAM vs ROM) started with solid state memory. (i.e. the memory chips in your computer). Whereas RAM could be written, read, erased and rewritten by the user though the normal course of computer operations, ROM could only be read.

Some early ROM could be erased only by removing it from the logic board, plugging it into a programmer and eposing the chip to UV light. Later parts could be erased by a command from the logic board on which they were embedded.

Today ROM is really more of an organizational distinction. Almost all ROM chips can actually be erased and rewritten (like the BIOS on your motherboard) but they are protected so that instructions that should not reguarlly be erased cannot be removed and maliciously changed.

That RAM / ROM convention carried over to optical media. Though the underlying technology was different, the general concepts were the same. The one big difference is that media like CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs really can't be rewritten, unlike their silicon counterparts.
