What does Roger Federer need to do to climb to the top of world rankings? – Tennis Special
Dominating the world number one spot for 302 consecutive weeks, Roger Federer stumbled down when he lost at the final of Swiss Indoors Basel.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion has been the leader of the ATP singles category for over 5 years. He is still one of the top challengers for most and they are eagerly waiting for him to return to his best.
While most of the professionals of his age are moving towards retirement, Federer still stands tall amongst all the other younger competitors. The Swiss displayed an outstanding performance in 2012 and achieved his 17th Grand Slam title after winning the
Wimbledon title.
Although the 31-year-old faces an enormous amount of pressure at the hands of the Serbian reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, yet he leads the head-to-head record by 16-14.
On the other hand, in recent tournaments, the Swiss Maestro lost in the final round of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London due to his dropping serve accuracy in the courts. He certainly needs to focus better on his first serve percentage.
The right-hander Swiss is undergoing through one of the toughest times in his career as reaching the world number one spot is not as big of a deal as compared to sustaining the rank. He is struggling to uphold his momentum and needs a colossal amount of
mental motivation to shine as used to.
The Swiss professional needs to display a great deal of improvement in his serve rate and swiftness as a player. He should be more alarmed than before due to the expected comeback of king of clay, Rafael Nadal, in 2013. The Spaniard took the back seat due
to a serious knee injury after the second round of Wimbledon 2012 and has been missing from the action since then.
Federer is still amongst the very best out there but he can prove his detractors wrong by his aggressive training for the upcoming season. One of the greatest threat is the world number three, Andy Murray. He is a rising tennis star and batting to secure
the lead after his successful campaign in the London 2012 Olympics and the US Open. He had the luxury of contesting in all the ATP Masters and looks in superb touch.
The world number two, Federer, is all set to rock for the next season. He will be contesting for a few ATP Masters 1000 event series, creating a possibility of nudging to the top rank.
However, he will be skipping a few events, like Sony Ericsson Open held in Miami and the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, and this will affect his rankings.
Even if this year does not turn out to be as remarkable as his fans anticipate it to be, he will still continue his voyage in the courts of competitive tennis until the 2016 Rio Olympics and even more. He will always be a living tennis legend, ruling the
hearts of many.
