  1. he is saying that he tried to play against fate but fate had won him because fate wanted him to play against fate.


  2. He thought he was taking control over a situation that fate had dealt him.  But he didn't realize that by taking control and trying to change fate he only sealed the deal.  

    He thought he could change his fate, but in trying, he was playing out what fate had planned for him.
