What does SLR mean??

slr means that a mirror is between the lens and the sensor/film. the light entering the lens hits the mirror and goes up to the viewfinder, so that the viewfinder and the sensor/film will see the same thing.

When you take the picture the mirror pops up and lets the light to the shutter, and behind the shutter is the sensor/film.

The other people did a good job telling you what slr stands for, I just felt a little more info was needed.

it means it uses a single lens instead of multiple ones like point and shoot cameras. slr cameras are a professional camera for the most part but now tons of people use them pro or not.
