What does Sociological Research involve for those wanting to be a Soc Professor?

I know that teaching and research go hand in hand, but I'm not sure what the research usually consists of: studies, theories, essays?

For someone who wants to be a Soc Professor, what should they expect to be doing in terms of research? Do professors usually find this stressful or demanding (even though it coincides with their interests)?

Thank you :)

  1. This is a very very broad question. 99% of the time a professor is hired for research and does teaching as the second portion of their job. A professor usually gets their PhD in something they love so yes it is stressful but fulfilling. A sociology professor might do anything from study the social cultures of Asian societies to study the social behaviors of cults.

  2. The research possible under the umbrella of sociology is extremely diverse.  This could involve observation of a sub culture within the homeless, or focus groups related to social policy in organizations.  Most research in sociology is qualitative, so methods of observations, interviews, and focus groups are often the norm.  Most professors divide their time between teaching and research, as it is important to also publish, especially for tenure.  However, life as a prof is enriching and diverse, and there are many opportunities for travel.
