I know it's an album by Theolonius Monk, but I wonder what it really means.

  1. If you are drinking alcoholic beverages without any added ingredients that is "straight" as in straight from the bottle. A straight with no chaser means no water, soda or any other substance is drunk after it.

If you ask for a straight with a "7 chaser" that would be with seven-up after drinking the straight as opposed to a bourbon/7 which is bourbon with 7-up mixed in it.

  2. Like Whisky, without a beer chaser after it.

A drink like gin, vodka or whisky is often taken "straight" (without water or ice), and followed by a larger glass of beer, which is drunk more slowly.  Because it comes after the other drink, it is said to chase it, so it is commonly known as a chaser.

When it's used as a metaphor, it means undiluted, pure, or concentrated, but mostly undiluted.  It's like when someone asks for the "straight" truth, they want the facts, and they don't want anyone to waste time softening them (or watering them down).

  3. Taking hard drink straight from its container, without diluting it by drinking a mild beverage or water after it ("chasing" it).
