Some say "dimension", some say "dimensions". I watched the very first episode, on its first transmission in 1963, and when Ian and Barbara ask Susan what TARDIS means, she replies "Time And Relative Dimension In Space".

Note that the video recording of "An Unearthly Child" in circulation now is NOT the original broadcast. The original broadcast tapes were destroyed many decades ago by the BBC in what some see as an act of vandalism. However, recording tape at the time was incredibly expensive, and it was considered routine economy to re-use tape. The version on sale now was recreated from rushes, and one can see William Hartnell fluffing his lines on several occasions. In particular, missing from this reconstruction is the scene in which the drama's title is explained.  Susan continually refers to her grandfather as "The Doctor". When Barbara and Ian visit Forman's scrapyard at night, having followed Susan home from school, they enter the door to the scrapyard, Barbara first. They are  talking of how Susan calls her grandfather "doctor", and Ian enters the doorway next. Before closing the door behind him, he looks pointedly up to the night sky, and says "Doctor? Doctor who?"  The programme title is not a name, but a question.

This scene is missing from the current version of "An Unearthly Child".
